Bhikkhu Bodhi has collected and translated the Buddha’s teachings on such matters as conflict resolution, interpersonal and social problem-solving, and the forging of harmonious relationships. The selections, all drawn from the Pāli Canon, the earliest record of the Buddha’s discourses, are organized into ten thematic chapters. The chapters deal with things like: the quelling of anger, good friendship, intentional communities, the settlement of disputes, and the establishing of an equitable society.
In addition to the materials offered in this book, we will also spend some time talking about the structure, content, and stylistic elements of the Pāli Canon. We will also look at how it came to be that we can read these ancient texts in modern English. That’s right, we will look at the lineages involved in keeping this canon alive and healthy, right down to our current generation of translators, teachers, and webmasters from Śrī Lanka to California to Somerville, MA (location of our publisher, Wisdom Publications).
