# 5 Liu Zhao

He was content in poverty and delighted in his devotion to the Way. He concentrated his mind on his work and his writing. Over a period of several decades, he never ventured outside of his courtyard gate.

# 10 Du Yi

When young, Du Yi was a quiet and unassuming boy. Respectful in his conduct and plainspoken in his loyalties, he lived in extreme poverty, but sought no productive employment. He had read widely in the classical texts and the writings of the hundred schools; and whether it be mathematical texts, calendrical studies, sky charts, or apocryphal works, there was none which he had not studied completely.

Yu Yuanzhi, seeing that [Fan] Xuan was in a chronic state of poverty, and knowing that the region had for a year been decimated by an epidemic, sought to provide food and provisions for him. Again, Xuan refused the offer.

He was content in poverty, and delighted in the Way. With total concentration, he lingered over his studies. He sought no gainful employment and regularly begged for food in exchange for recitations from the Songs. Even though his household had not even a dou of provisions in store, he still remained content.

His wife was worried because of him and once said that either he burn all his books or she would seek a divorce.Huan laughed and told her, “Have you not heard of the wife of Zhu Maichen?” Most of those who heard about this remark simply sneered at it. But Huan grew more resolute, and so became a thoroughly devoted classicist.

Shichen yue:

Fan Xuanzi delighted in the Way; lived happily in poverty, displayed expansive airs and flawless instruction. These are all eminent and hallowed examples of consummate Ruists.

An Edict from the Taishi era [266-275] # 3 Chen Shao

The Preceptor to the King of Yan, Chen Shao, is irreproachable and steadfast, pure of mind and calm in deportment; and his accomplishments are well-known to the countrymen of his region. He is deeply committed to learning and loves antiquity; he is widely conversant with the Six Classics and thoroughly delights in the Canons and Announcements. Ceaselessly engaged in study, even in his old age, he should remain at Our side so as to deepen Our classical studies. Let him be made Servitor Within the Palace.
